Palliative Care Physicians

Richard A Balter, MD, FACP

Dr. Balter was born and raised in Queens, New York. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1974, achieved a medical degree at New York University School of Medicine in 1978, and then completed an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center  from 1978-81. In 1981-82 he completed a fellowship program in General Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC. He then returned to New York as a full time attending at SUNY Stony Brook and the VAMC, Northport.  His clinical skills, teaching abilities, and research papers earned him the honor of becoming a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1986. He then pursued a private practice of internal medicine in Port Jefferson where he continues to work with his two partners Dr. Rosario Romano and Dr. Denise Abselet. As his focus was geriatric medicine he gained experience in hospice and palliative medicine allowing him the opportunity to become board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine in October 2012. His experience as a per diem medical director at the Good Shepherd Hospice strengthened his ability to care for the terminally ill patient and their family. The team approach and shared responsibilities of all the members of the hospice team added to the quality of care for the patients and fostered a positive and rewarding environment.
