St. Charles Hospital Orthopedics Earns a Spot on U.S. News & World Report's List of Best Hospitals in New York:
St. Charles Hospital has been ranked as one of New York’s Best Hospitals according to U.S. News & World Report's annual survey of leading healthcare institutions. Of 184 hospitals in the New York/New York Metropolitan area, St. Charles ranked 50 in the specialty area of orthopedics.
“We are extremely proud of St. Charles Hospital’s ranking in the latest U.S. News & World Report ‘America’s Best Hospitals’ survey,” said Jim O’Connor, Executive Vice President and CAO, St. Charles. “Our first and foremost priority is always the delivery of high quality, safe and skilled care to our patients. This commitment to excellence is recognized in U.S. News & World Report ranking of St. Charles in the specialty area of orthopedics.”
U.S. News & World Reports rates hospitals in 16 specialties. For consideration in a specialty, a hospital had to have performed a minimum number of specified procedures on Medicare patients during 2007, 2008, and 2009 or the hospital had to be named among the best in the specialty by at least one physician in the last three annual surveys. Hospitals passing the criteria received a numerical assessment. The U.S. News scores equally four elements: reputation, patient survival, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. Rankings can be found at usnews.com
St. Charles has long been considered a leader in the area of orthopedics and, over the past decade, pioneered the utilization of computer navigation in orthopedic surgery. Recognizing the benefit of computer assisted surgery for patients, including more accurate implant placement and smaller incisions, St. Charles was the first hospital in New York State to introduce computer-assisted orthopedic surgery when performing a total knee arthroplasty, soon followed by computer navigation for anterior cruciate ligament (ACR) surgeries. The hospital became the first in the northeast to perform a total hip replacement with computer assistance. Today, more total joint replacement surgeries are performed at St. Charles than any other hospital in Suffolk County and the hospital holds the distinction of being the second in the world to utilize computer navigation during a total shoulder replacement surgery.
