St. Charles Receives $4.2 Million Dollar Grant from NYS for Expansion of Emergency Department
St. Charles Hospital recently received a $4.2 million grant from New York State as part of the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program, which was authorized by the state Legislature. This grant will provide St. Charles the opportunity to expand its Emergency Department (ED).
Many emergency departments today face increasing challenges due to growing patient numbers and an inability to flex capacity to meet demand. Contributing to the issues are intrinsic factors that include departmental layout and square footage. St. Charles is one of those hospitals experiencing “growing pains.”
Currently, 23,000 patients visit the ED at St. Charles each year. Approximately 17% of these patients are individuals seeking medically supervised withdrawal. The current square footage of the Emergency Department cannot accommodate this volume of patients. Complicating the issue is that the diverse needs of patients seeking medical care keep within patient populations presenting at the ED. With limited space, it is a challenge to efficiently flow patients through the department.
An expansion of the Emergency Department at St. Charles will provide the opportunity to better manage patient flow and address the disparate needs of patients seeking emergency care, thus allowing for overall higher quality of patient care. The expansion plan includes increasing the space by a total of 3,750 square feet, allowing for four to five additional treatment bays, an equal number of treatment rooms, including a psychiatric treatment room, additional nursing and charting stations, and a larger waiting room.
“We are extremely grateful to New York State for the funding that will make this important initiative a reality,” said Jim O’Connor, President, St. Charles Hospital. "Increasing the footprint of our Emergency Department will allow us to continue to accept and provide high quality care to all patients who present at our Emergency Department.”
The Emergency Department (ED) expansion at St. Charles was one of 25 projects across New York State to receive funding from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program. The $187 million awarded in grants are intended to improve patient care through the development of high-quality medical facilities and programs serving the inpatient, primary care, mental health, substance use disorder and long-term care needs of communities throughout the State.
