Concussion Management Center
The Concussion Management Center at St. Charles Hospital is Long Island's leading resource for the evaluation and treatment of concussion, a common, but serious traumatic brain injury.
The Center's designated ThinkSMART! concussion physicians possess in-depth knowledge about this medically complex condition and have extensive experience diagnosing and treating concussion, which develops and presents differently in each patient.
Provide a more thorough assessment of the child/athlete/adult following a blow to head
Knowing that x-rays, CT Scans or other imaging tests cannot help detect concussion, theThinkSMART! concussion physicians at St. Charles perform a more complete evaluation and examine both physical and neurological performance. Because there is no single test for concussion, St. Charles physicians examine reported signs and symptoms of concussion, and test for balance, vision, reaction time, motor speed, memory and more. When assessing student athletes for concussion, ThinkSMART! physicians consult with the athlete's parents to gain insight about changes in the patient's behavior and academic performance.
For patients who have taken a computerized neurocognitive exam prior to the suspected concussion, St. Charles Hospital's ThinkSMART! concussion physicians have critical information; a baseline against which they can measure each patients' current neurocognitive performance. Develop and implement an individualized concussion treatment plan for patients
As a leader in rehabilitation on Long Island, St. Charles Hospital's approach to concussion treatment is based on advanced scientific evidence and developed to reflect the most current guidelines from the CDC, the New York State Department of Health and the International Conference on Concussion in Sport.
ThinkSMART! physicians consider every aspect of their patient's health, including physical, social, developmental and intellectual, and build a recovery team which includes therapists, parents, teachers, coaches, athletic trainers and, of course, the patients themselves. For student athletes, St. Charles Hospital's concussion physicians implement R.E.A.P, a community-based concussion management program utilized in partnership with the Brain Injury Association of New York State and The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, Presbyterian/St. Luke's.
St. Charles Rehabilitation's Brain Injury Speciality Program is accredited by CARF International, the world's leading authority on the accreditation of rehabilitation facilities, and St. Charles brings this expertise to the treatment of concussion. St. Charles provides specialized outpatient rehabilitation services which address the underlying cause of common concussion symptoms, including:
- Vestibular Therapy to help heal inner ear damage and improve balance
- Physical Therapy to gain muscle strength and support better coordination and agility
- Neuropsychological Testing to measure gradual improvements in brain functions like attention span, language skills, motor skills and more.
St. Charles offers this entire scope of services at the Concussion Management Center.
Ensure a return to optimum health for each patient and a safe “return to play” progression for athletes
Because concussion symptoms can re-occur if a patient has not fully healed, the concussion physicians from St. Charles Hospital's ThinkSMART! program implement a progressive return to physical activity, also called a "return to play" for student athletes.
St. Charles physical therapists and athletic trainers test concussed patients at several levels of exertion, including during light physical activity, sport-specific drills, non-contact training drills and more. The findings are reported to St. Charles Hospital's ThinkSMART! concussion physicians, who weigh these results against other information about the patient to make a final decision as to whether the patient is ready to "return to play."
Every patient treated at St. Charles Hospital's Concussion Management Center is cleared to "return to play" by a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating concussion.
