Cancer: A Community Health Needs Assessment

Cancer: A Community Health Needs Assessment: Executive Summary identifies and assesses cancer-related community health needs in the primary service areas served by Mather and St. Charles Hospitals. In addition, it will serve as a foundation for developing and implementing a strategy to address those needs that the hospitals determine they are able to meet in whole or part and that are not currently met.

Lung Cancer Screening Program

St. Charles Hospital participates in Catholic Health Services' Lung Cancer Screening Program for current or former smokers.

Part of the American College of Radiology’s Lung Cancer Screening Registry, the initiative offers low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for those at high risk of developing lung cancer. Under the Medicare-approved eligibility criteria, people are eligible for a lung cancer screening program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Between the ages of 55 and 77
  • Have a smoking history of at least 1 pack per day for 30 years (or 2 packs daily for 15 years)
  • Are currently smoking or have quit smoking within the last 15 years
  • Currently have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer

The painless, non-invasive low dose CT scan takes just 10 to 15 minutes to complete and does not require fasting, injections or medications. Most insurances and Medicare cover annual screening for eligible patients.

In addition to coordinating follow-up care based on national guidelines and established evidence-based practices, the program’s nurse navigators can answer questions and determine whether screening is right for you.
