Parkinson’s disease

St. Charles Hospital is one of only four hospitals on Long Island to offer DaTscan imaging technology to help explain the neurologic cause of tremors.

The Parkinson’s disease and Movements Disorders Center at St. Charles Hospital offers technologically advanced, comprehensive services for  those experiencing unexplained difficulty with movement, such as tremors and stiffening muscles. The Center specializes in the evaluation and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, a difficult-to-diagnose and treat movement disorder for which there is neither a single, definitive test nor a known cure. Our goal is to provide patients with the most definitive diagnosis as early as possible by utilizing clinical specialists and state-of-the-art resources. We are committed to discussing, developing and implementing a comprehensive disease management plan that provides patients with comfort, convenience and quality of life.

The Center is proud to offer DaTscan, the first FDA-approved brain-imaging tool which physicians use to help explain the neurologic cause of tremors. Tremors can be drug-induced or can be associated with any number of conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders. Neurologists at St. Charles may employ DaTscan to assist in making this critical distinction.

As part of a larger evaluative process, our neurologists examine DaTscan test results for the presence of dopamine, a naturally occurring chemical that is essential for motion control and proper muscle functioning. A dopaminedeficiency suggests that a patient’s tremors may be Parkinson’s-related. DaTscan results are used as a supplement to aid neurologists in the diagnosis of complex tremor/Parkinsonism associated disorders.
