Muscular Dystrophy Clinic
St. Charles Hospital hosts the only Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Sponsored Clinic in Suffolk County.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Sponsored Clinic at St. Charles Hospital's Outpatient Specialty Care Center provides comprehensive and coordinated care for adults and children with neuromuscular disorders.
The MDA Clinic is held on the first and third Fridays of each month and offers patients access to a team of multi-disciplinary physicians including specialists in neurology and physiatry (rehabilitation physicians). Affiliated physicians specializing in pulmonary, orthopedics, genetics and cardiology are also available.
The MDA Clinic provides onsite specialty services including social services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, radiology, laboratory and nutrition services. In addition to muscular dystrophies, other types of muscle and nerve disorders are treated.
These include myopathies, inherited nerve disorders (charcot marie tooth), motor neuron disease (spinal muscular atrophy) and disorders of the neuromuscular junction (myasthenia gravis).
Representatives from the MDA attend each clinic and are available for consultation and support as well.
