Hospital Quarterly Update

Winter 2017 Hospital Update

We now find ourselves at the end of the year. It’s an appropriate time to pause and reflect on the past 12 months. I’d like to end on a high note and speak to an extraordinary event that occurred at St. Charles Rehabilitation recently.

For nearly 110 years St. Charles has been recognized as the regional leader in rehabilitation services; setting the gold standard for quality of care and the most technologically advanced rehabilitative treatment available. Several months ago the bar was set even higher when St. Charles became the only hospital on Long Island to acquire the Indego exoskeleton.

This device is a powered lower limb orthotic that offers individuals with impaired mobility a new level of independence and St. Charles is currently one of only nine hospitals in the country participating in a clinical study of patients using Indego. Recently we watched as a young man, paralyzed from the mid-torso down, walked for the first time in years using the Indego exoskeleton.

It was an outstanding accomplishment and achievement for this young man and his dedication to working so hard to make it happen humbled all of us at St. Charles. This inspiring moment reminded us of why we do this work and how important it is to continue.

We’ve worked for nearly 110 years on changing people’s lives for the better and have succeeded in returning hope and independence to thousands of individuals. It is a privilege to do this work and we end this year with deep gratitude to our patients for entrusting their care to St. Charles Hospital.

We’ll make New Year’s resolutions shortly. I resolve to continue to place the well-being of our patients as our highest priority as we seek new, innovative and technologically advanced ways to provide health care.

Count on it,
